Premium Privacy Shrubs. Delivered.

Step-by-step guide on how to properly plant arborvitae with proper spacing, digging, and mulching.

Step 1: Choose the Right Spacing

Spacing depends on how quickly you want privacy.

  • 2.5–3 ft apart → Faster fill-in, tighter hedge

  • 3.5–4 ft apart → Standard spacing (most popular)

  • 5+ ft apart → Looser screen, more natural look

Emerald Green is typically spaced 3 ft on center.

Step 2: Dig the Proper Hole

  •  Dig the hole 2x as wide as the root ball

  • Hole depth should be equal to root ball height

  • The top of the root ball should sit level with or slightly above surrounding soil

  •  Do NOT plant too deep. This is the #1 mistake.

Step 3: Set the Plant

  •  Remove container carefully (cut if necessary)

  • If roots are circling, gently loosen them

  • Place plant upright and straight

  • Backfill with native soil (avoid heavy amendments)

Lightly tamp soil to remove air pockets.

Step 4: Water Thoroughly

Immediately soak the root ball after planting.

First 30 days:
Water deeply 2–3 times per week.

After establishment (6–8 weeks):
1 deep watering per week during dry periods.

Overwatering is just as harmful as underwatering. Soil should be moist — not swampy.

Step 5: Mulch Properly

  • Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around base

  • Keep mulch 2–3 inches away from trunk

  • Do not pile mulch against stem (“mulch volcano”)

Mulch helps retain moisture and regulate temperature.

Winter Protection (Zone 4–6)

  •  Water deeply before ground freezes

  • Avoid heavy snow piling on branches

  • Use burlap wrap in high-wind areas if needed

Emerald Green arborvitae are hardy, but winter burn can occur in exposed locations.

What to Expect

  •  Minimal visible growth first season (roots establishing)

  • 6–12 inches growth per year after establishment (Emerald Green)

  • Green Giant can grow 2–3 ft per year

Privacy takes time — but proper planting speeds it up.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Planting too deep

  • Letting root ball dry out

  • Overwatering

  • Poor drainage areas

  • Spacing too close for mature width Minimal visible growth first season (roots establishing)
